Case Study: Interactive History & Command Kiosk (TICK) for Indian Army Museums 📌 Executive Summary The Touchscreen Information & Command Kiosk (TICK) App is a secure, offline-first Android-based database and interactive briefing application developed exclusively to store and display localized historical, command, and administrative records related to the Indian Military. Designed for deployment on air-gapped touchscreen kiosk terminals in Indian Army division museums (complying with secure military hardware procurement guidelines), the app serves as an interactive digital exhibit and command portal for personnel and visitors, showcasing battle lineages, commander Digests of Service (with integrated PDF attachments), key responsibility areas (KRAs), honors and awards, and official messages—storing all database records and assets strictly locally on the device itself. We are deeply honored to support our national defense forces by providing a robust, battle-tested administrative tool that operates securely without external network dependencies. 🛠️ The Challenge Military headquarters and tactical operations centers enforce absolute network isolation (air-gapping) to prevent unauthorized transmission of sensitive information. Consequently, traditional cloud-based content management systems (CMS) and real-time backend databases are entirely unusable. Content updates—such as updating commander Digests of Service, publishing directives, or updating historical records—previously required manual redeployments or printing. The engineering team at GJ Software Labs had to solve several unique challenges: Air-Gapped Data Sync: Designing a system to sync complex hierarchical records and heavy media files (images, video, PDFs) without network access, using only secure, physically transferred files. Local Data Integrity: Structuring a robust local relational database on the terminal, with transactional integrity, data validation, and automated cleanup mechanisms. Multi-Flavor Layouts: Supporting multiple configurations (Division, Brigade, and Division Troop Units - DTU levels) with custom assets, emblems, mottos, and navigation tabs, compiling all configurations from a single codebase. Embedded Resource Performance: Rendering large vector PDFs, compressing physical image resources, and managing video buffers smoothly on secure kiosk hardware. ⚙️ Our Engineering Approach & Solution We designed and implemented a standalone Android kiosk application built on Flutter that leverages an isolated local relational database. State Management: Asynchronous state propagation to dynamically adjust layout based on active flavor. Local Database: Secured local relational database serving as the offline storage layer, maintaining robust relational integrity. Offline Document Viewer: Integrated document rendering pipeline for military histories and operational handbooks. Media & Playback: Local image compression and media playback pipelines optimized for offline displays. Offline Synchronization & Media Parser: Data Parsing: Structured data parser to load configuration and content updates from standard offline spreadsheets. Physical Asset Sync: File utility linking external media folders directly to local database records based on integrity checks. 🔑 Key Engineering Milestones Multi-Flavor App Compilation: Established configuration parameters to generate distinct app variants (Division, Brigade, and DTU levels) dynamically, overriding app headers, custom mottos, and featured commander roles. Directory-Based Sync Engine: Built an offline database sync manager that scans local storage, registers new milestones, gallery photos, and videos, and automatically purges old database rows and obsolete media files. Database Schema Architecture: Implemented a local schema that handles transactional integrity and automated migrations to support dynamically added fields and linked gallery paths. Hardened Kiosk Environment: Integrated operating-system-level controls ensuring the application runs as a pinned task with restricted navigation and layout locks. PDF and Media Caching Pipeline: Created a media compressor that optimizes raw photos during synchronization to conserve local storage on display terminals. 📈 Technical Specifications & Performance Database Initialization Latency: Relational tables and config files load instantly upon launch.
